It’s fabric when you get it. If you make something out of it, it becomes cloth.

Hmm, IDK, maybe? Last night I thought of a wsy to explain it. It's like the difference between wood and lumber. If you were going to build a shed you would say "I'm going to the lumber yard to buy some lumber." Nobody says, "I'm going to the wood store..."

Actually you'd name the store, like, "I'm going to Lowe's..." or whatever but you get the idea.

I use both words. Idk if there's a particular idiolectic pattern to when I use one vs the other, but I'm unaware of any specific difference.

I'm also probably a weirdo and have never been one of the cool kids, so YMMV on how much my answer applies to everybody else ( :

I suppose I say "cloth" in some contexts but in relation to sewing or shopping/purchasing it's always "fabric."
