yeah my main requisite is just something with Bluetooth and a back up camera. we can do like a $1000-2000 down payment and finance to the tune of ~200/month probably

back up cameras are nice, but if you go with an older car (esp hatchbacks) they will have much better visibility which imo is better than a back up camera. bluetooth is also pretty easy to add in a couple different ways depending on whats in the car. just saying, dont let those be make or break
lean on the "or some such" in terms of the options you laid out, honda/toyota have massively gone up in price and their reputation for being affordable and reliable is out of date by decades. many good recent ford and hyundai options for example
car dealers (esp used) deserve the bad rep they have, so sticking to craigslist/fbm if possible and financing yourself is a good idea, if you can get a rec for a reliable auto shop a pre-purchase inspection isn't a bad investment either
I'm not up on the latest models, but the focus line has been reliably quite good for about 20 years now and is a great option to look into (depending on condition, model year, spec etc)
After a while with whatever first car we get, I would eventually like to make the shift to an EV. less than 50 miles daily easily, we could very easily charge with just a typical 120V outlet overnight
yeah the buy japanese thing for cars is a solid product of 80s-early oughts, korean and us brands have really stepped up while japanese brands started charging prices closer to german cars in the states
