I guess someone told you already, but that's sleep paralysis. I used to have it as a teen. It comes out of stress and anxiety. So maybe there's something worrying you?

I used to see a ghost in my chest, or a dark menacing shape looking at me from the side of the bed. It would feel very menacing.

Your brain wakes before time, so your body's paralyzed by sleep. Your brain wakes your body up by scaring itself awake with hallucinations.
The lack of breath is because in this state your breath is very shallow, and it feels insufficient.
