Yeah i think its a common misconception that nintendo just threw the timeline together to appease the fans when in reality, each games story has had a spot on the timeline in mind at the time of their creation. Only exception is FSA which they kinda just shoved at the end of the child timeline.

But that's really not any different than any other video game or fictional series, is it? Dragon Quest, Castlevania, Metroid, Ys

Even Mario had a small continuity for the first several Super Mario Bros. games. Sunshine has backstory clips from SMB, SMW, and Mario 64 in the story intro for example.

Not very familiar with Dragon Quest/Ys continuity, but Castlevania mostly makes it work with multiple protagonists across a large family and Metroid with multiple planets (and different sectors of same). I'd take either over the mess that is attempted Zelda continuity.

(I did!) I liked care they put into the manual of SMW that says the game takes place after SMB3 and references the sunken airship.
