i pinch (separation of the subq fat layer means more space for fluid and less likely to hit muscle layer), and then pull to the side to z-track. to properly z-track you have to let go after the needle comes out, so that's when i let go. though, i do need to get better at doing it.

I just went through injection training and my doc told me you wanna start letting go like halfway through to prevent as much fluid from coming back out as you can. I forget that sometimes tho, and there's not been a big difference either way

Sub-q is with a short needle, at a 45° angle, into pinched fat, usually at the belly.
Intermuscular is with a long needle, straight in, with taught skin.

my ex was a nurse and their advice was to anti-pinch the skin at the infection site so it’s taught like the face of boe. Then stick the needle all the way in, let go of the skin, and inject. You’ll still want a bandaid but when you retract the needle, the skin will close around the injection site.
