One, this is the best summation of why I cannot ever see this movie on a screen and walk away. Everyone is fully committed and willing to go full bore in this movie.
Two, this is incredible writing about what a lot of people considered a bad adaptation, and you should be super proud of it.
it's intensely gratifying to see people slowly start to come around on this movie and also Reeves as an actor but also I like the "what took you so long?" feeling too
It’s aged like a fine wine. I had issues at the time because of the changes from the comic you laid out, but over time, appreciating it for what it is and how it condenses the lore and characters, it’s so well done. Every actor makes the absolute most of their screen time. It’s great.
(Not to mention NBC’s attempt to make a TV-PG series adaptation made this look like solid gold in contrast. Never mind they casted a guy that looked the part - that was such a misjudgment of how to handle the source material)
Quotes from press tour in your piece are great. Oil Change is exactly right and picks up the Hellblazer vibe perfectly (although that would be a petrol change?)
Great piece. Everyone is cooking in this movie and it is one of my favorite Reeves and Hounshou roles. We got a ripping good time with dark comic adaptations from 2002-2005
very grateful to Polygon for letting me write about Constantine. I'd been trying to pitch a piece about it for YEARS and kept getting shut down, until an editor finally said yes - and then that outlet shuttered forever. I was just about to finish up this essay for my Patreon when they reached out.
I feel your pain. I was trying to pitch several HELLBLAZER-related deep-dive pieces back when the TV show premiered. Closest I came was a listicle for Flavorwire.
