In the past people laid off or leaving the big tech companies like IBM would have gone to found the next generation of startups.

With the dire state of startups and the VC ecosystem in general I don't think that will be the case any more.

It’s an obvious excuse not to give out a severance package. Laying off all those people and still having to pay a minimum 3 months salary as severance wasn’t helping the bottom line as much as they’d hoped.

In all of the 35 years I worked in IT, I have never seen such a cruel method of reducing staff.
Why would anyone work for a company that treats its employees so badly.
MS had a net income of $88.1 billion in 2024 and they wouldn't give severances.

This feels like they are already preparing for the AI bust (People disliking it/it costing more than they can charge for it/adding it damages the core products) And now they are preparing to spend their cash piles on stock buybacks when that happens.
