The rockstar engineers also tend to cause the most problems. They do all sorts of crazy shit to make their code work and when it blows up at an inopportune time, they then get to play hero and "save the day". As a PM, it's maddening to watch it happen over + over again.

I am very lucky to be part of a fantastic team. We all have our 'niche' areas of deeper knowledge but it's the collaboration that makes it all worthwhile. We all work from home, but are constantly in conversations amongst us, at times even just to "sound off".

"Rockstar engineers" is a very hero-worship-like concept. Right-wingers love stories about geniuses, super-talented artists, beautiful princesses, unrealistically strong men etc.
Left doesn't do that anywhere near as much.

What is interesting about the 10x "myth" is that afaik it comes from "The Mythical Man Month" and is introduced in a chapter whose main purpose is to explain that you can't have a strategy to only have 10x engineers 🤣
