Yeah. Turns out that a bunch of upper-middle-class rich white men in early middle age who've spent all their lives being told they're clever trying to do incisive social-political-religious commentary that Means Stuff comes out *more* adolescent than the same men just doing silly jokes.

I mean, I think big chunks of Brian still hold up very well indeed, but the Loretta stuff in particular... oof. Especially given Cleese and Gilliam's current comments.

Yes, it's such a strange experience rewatching it at such a long time removed from the last viewing, and so close to rewatching HG.

At base it's the same well conceptualised, constructed and performed sort of jokes. It's very funny!

Everyone in the room is younger than me, and we include trans people, enbys, misc sexualities and cultural backgrounds...

I was expecting HG to be troubling but no one had anything negative to say about it, so we didn't have our guard up & it was such a radically different vibe right from the off!

Yeah. And it's better plotted than Grail, and the production is obviously so much better. But... it's a bunch of forty-year-old Oxbridge men thinking "well, we've read two or three whole books on this, and I'm sure we're clever enough to get all the major questions of society and religion right."
