If you're looking for people who actively engage with the community, check the Replies tab on their profile.

Another tip: find quiet or inactive posters via https://mary-ext.codeberg.page/bluesky-quiet-posters/. I'm gradually unfollowing those who haven't posted/replied in months.

To those using the term "skeet" and "skeeting" as a nickname for post/posting on Bluesky: Be aware this is a derogatory term for some (see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Skeet_(Newfoundland)) & has even less family-friendly meanings in slang; feel free to look it up.

Hashtags now work in Bluesky (including in your profile bio). You can search platform-wide or just within a user's feed.

When posting images, add ALT text. Not only does this help visually impaired readers who use screen readers but it helps w/discoverability (custom feeds, search)

To remind myself, I turn on "require ALT text": https://bsky.app/settings/accessibility
This is also where you can disable GIF autoplay.

If your Home feed seems too quiet or too full of Replies, you can tweak in https://bsky.app/settings/following-feed.

An aside: I rarely use my Home feed; I browse Custom Feeds instead (I wrote https://debbieohi.com/2024/03/bluesky-tips/#bluesky-feeds). Anyone can make feeds but I recommend learning the basics first.

Bluesky gives us MANY options to adjust our platform experience, curate what we see. Strongly recommend taking the time to explore https://bsky.app/settings, starting with https://bsky.app/moderation. Not only can you mute/block accts but you can mute words & tags, https://bsky.app/messages/settings from people you follow (or not at all).

Filling out your profile helps show you're a Real Person (not a bot).

Including a LINK in your profile bio gives people more info & a way to verify.

Make an intro post that gives people an idea of what you're about. Give them a reason to follow you, not just "buy my stuff."
