you are not a serious person if your fear of A.I. is “what if scary computer decide 2 extinct humans” and not the health insurance companies using it to sentence people to death

I just assumed that is what they already do. Their lust for creating corpses is being honed by AI engines. I don’t think there’s an aspect of out civilization they aren’t trying to control. The robots being trained for the military are because US soldiers won’t mass murder unarmed civilians.
This is pretty much what let to the Butlerian Jihad and the banning of “thinking machines” in the Dune series. A small group of people used technology to become cyborg overlords but then their own AI Ominus usurps them and leads to the enslavement of humanity for 1000 years.
I read something similar to this in the Ethics for Dummies book and how using robots in war distances ourselves from the killing. And i feel like the health insurance algorithm is very similar because it removes anyone who will complain to the boss or allow wiggle room.
I think the non-hyperbole way to describe that fear is: some people are afraid that when computers mimic sentience perfectly, they will learn to harbor ill will. If an AI denies an important insurance claim in my life instead of a real person, this isn't going to make me more upset than otherwise.
OK...but that link didn't really tell me how AI would effect the life of an 80 year old retired woman who lives in a mobile home park and is not an artist or creative in any way
In the UK the government is using AI in areas ranging from tax to welfare.
A story which broke yesterday is that it is being used to detect welfare fraud but an internal assessment reveals bias based on age, nationality and disability.
I'm willing to bet the UK isn't alone in this.
The hypothetical that AI could become sentient and destroy all humans was an exaggeration authored by AI companies themselves to make it seem like the tech was more advanced and powerful than it actually is.
My fear is that it will be used to automate low skilled repetitive labor in manufacturing. Suddenly all these people with no education get the rug pulled out from under them. Doing so while also simultaneously dismantling the social safety net is a recipe for Hoovervilles.
I fear what it doing now. I fear what it has already done. It has subverted many and will continue to shape human minds. "If you want to change culture first you change people."

In OR/WA the data centers got tax advantages, however now we gotta run natural gas generators next to the free, infinite power so cops can get AI to write police reports for them (because that’s also now a thing, and terrifying).
Or big corporations using AI for capital surveillance or the fact that you can compare the energy consumption of LLMs with small countries or all the other ways black box systems are being used or predatory dynamic pricing omg I could keep going…and yet I still use it 😒
"the robots are taking over" has always read as such an unexamined bourgeois fear fantasy tae me bc it's fundamentally about the instruments that create the world they benefit from rebelling
For reals, it's like, "Well what if scary capitalists decide 2 extinct humans?" Because guess what, they're basically deciding that AS WE SPEAK, whether it's inaction on climate change or simply denying insurance coverage for a vital treatment. We fear takeover but we've already been taken over.
My "trigger" for going total scorched earth on AI was a video I saw of someone showing off a program that let you replace your face on the webcam feed with someone else's, and I legit couldn't figure out a *good* reason for this sort of tool existing and not being an abuse machine
AI seems to have an accelerationist effect on any existing incentives for those implementing them. Much easier to maximize greed when you can weaponize a learning model.
I just hope we can change those incentives sooner than later, people are already dying from this shit 😭

am i more out of touch than an 80-year-old?
she's only a bit more than a dozen years older than me & sorry to say I know all about it. I'm an artist. we're forced to know about it.

i totally get why you know about it

we know for sure AI is being used to turn down medical approvals. so that's possible as well.
and I would bet Wolfy is correct as well.
she also thinks everywhere she moves to is contaminated with meth so i took the ai thing with a grain of salt

I realize Spicy Autocomplete isn't that kind of AI, but still.
So that’s also why I’m scared of AI.
