I suspect this definition of masculinity is to blame for the "male flight" in fields like biology. I

f women can do it, it must not be a trait unique to men, and therefore, it is not masculine.

I wonder if pregnancy being a female ability contributes to this line of thinking. (Seems like a lot of the birth rate discussion is male resentment that a female ability is so valuable yet out of their control.) And thus trying to find a male equivalent becomes important

yeah that’s usually where i end up, though often when i see “healthy masculinity” or whatever, it doesn’t feel like masculinity to me… the negative psychological/cultural associations are so strong from my experiential that i’m mot sure i’ll ever be able to see it as “masculinity”, even if i want to

A lot of people just use "healthy masculinity" to mean "men being psychologically healthy" which is good but also is not recognizably "masculine" in any sense.

yeah anytime someone has describe healthy masculinity to me i just sorta have a blank stare and blinkingly respond: what you’re describing just sounds like the attributes of a healthy human adult regardless of sex/gender/etc

I don't think there's even anything inherently toxic about this construction (fragile, perhaps) - it's how men react to female encroachment into masculine spaces that's toxic.
