Question re: cancelled NSF, NIH, other govt funding: I thought the legislative branch determined the budget, not the executive branch? Isn’t that the whole basis for the phrase “power of the purse “?
I also wonder why, instead of rushing to comply with a vaguely worded order, administrators don’t just say “this is not a DEI program.” Eg. Someone was worried about their research on LGBTQ healthcare—why not push back and say “this is not DEI, it’s studying health in a significant population in US”
The far right is fighting a war on definitions like woke, DEI, diversity, and the people of the USA lose as soon as we accepts the right’s definitions of these words
It’s far beyond how a program is described, now. All NIH and NSF study sections “postponed” and budgeted money frozen means a lot of these projects are dead or deeply wounded. The message is clear that scientific research priorities will be directed by the king, not the scientific community.
