Politicians who deliberately lie could be forced from office in Wales, under new “globally pioneering” proposals to restore people’s trust in politics.

Other changes suggested by the Welsh parliament standards committee that could come into play by next year would make any candidate in elections liable to criminal prosecution if they make false statements to win votes.
Under these new proposals, if a Senedd member is caught lying, they would be asked to retract the lie and a correction would be placed on their profile online. They could also face suspension and be “recalled and removed” by voters.
Hannah Blythyn, chair of the committee, said: “People should be able to trust those who represent them. Our report is putting forward recommendations to radically enhance our rules and make it clear to anyone who wants to hold public office that deliberately deceiving is not acceptable.”
