I heard today about a trend on TT about dressing as an office siren and how some women did that and got fired. I wondered if the idea of sexing up women's dress in a professional space was about trying to corral women back into being sexual objects who only value the male gaze, again.
That's a good hunch but I've been tracking that trend and I think that it's just young women inexperienced with office life and were never taught appropriate office wear. But maybe there is a small portion who actually wanted male attention that way.
These are the same messages I heard from my b1950 mom growing up that I had to unlearn. “If you’re not a skinny, dress-wearing, pink loving, girly-girl, no man will ever love you!”
It messed me up.
Been married to a guy 15 yrs btw. Still not any of those things. /eyeroll
These rich and (mostly) white grifters are so desperate to have cultural capital, I think we should mock and then ignore them. Deny them the attention they want so much.
These conservatives say us feminists have blue hair, piercings, and fat. So what if we do? As a feminist, I don't actually care because I don't hang my self-worth on my appearance or accessories.
That's real freedom. Not this gender essentialist nonsense.
The danger is when/if these conservatives gain power. Then they'll try to enforce their values on the rest of us. Ignore their extraordinarily rude opinions, sure, but we have to make sure they don't gain influence.
I just can't emphasize how much I don't care about rich and (mostly) white women fussing about their gender. Of course, I'll bite back when they come for the rest of us. But these women want to force themselves back into submission and oppression? Their own problem.
People can do whatever they like although assigning sandwich making duties to the best sandwich maker (logical) 😅 but wasn't the whole point of liberal democracy not imposing your choices on others!
