But New England and Midwest states would never allow this. Because they're at a higher latitude, their amount of daylight varies a lot with the seasons, so for them, keeping one time all year round would mean almost no daylight am or almost no daylight pm at some times of year.

Because while no time change would be a disaster for high-latitude states, keeping the time change is really not that big a deal for low-latitude states. Just a minor inconvenience.
