a1. Didn’t use it in practice, but did play with Second Life back in the day when universities were buying islands to ‘replicate’ physical campuses online. Struggled to see a purpose myself. #lthechat

Hi Kelly - the trouble is, the reply doesn't show me which post you are asking about? Is it iGoogle or Second Life - with SL - as with animation tools - I liked that students could use them better than I ever would - and surprise themselves as well as me with what they could do! #LTHEchat
Oh @maryjacob.bsky.social I so wanted this work well - I had a great character, but never really get started. The lack of purpose if what made it fall away for me.
I made the ‘mistake’ of making my avatar look like me. Went in, got repeatedly pushed over - one memorable time by two giant penises (!) - was sworn at, and decided I didn’t want to encourage students onto it.
During my induction, I was introduced to second life as the saviour to community for distance learning. Never really caught on, we moved to introducing online tutorials quite soon afterwards and the need evaporated.
I always felt that people were using it because they thought it was cool (sometimes long after any real novelty had worn off,) but always struggled to find a genuine use for it.
