What people truly know and then pursue are conclusions drawn from personal experience, not other’s extractions/generalizations. They commit to what they have constructed themselves.

Teachers of assessment need ways for people to take initiative, become engaged, and work at this with others.

Teachers of assessment could stimulate initiative toward those questions and the answers to those questions if they could present to a class a video of an actual assessment with sufficient complexity to spark something——exactly what no one ever knows.

…On arithmetic skills and concepts, a content and level which makes it accessible to most people, even grad students.

When I use it I have watchers discuss in groups of 3 or 4. Have a brief discussion of how this relates to this course, and watch it again. Another small group time followed by…

…another large group discussion where I write down EXACTLY what people say ( on a screen or on large paper).

I look for questions people raise and collect those on another paper, which I keep to bring to the next class. They also get a copy of the compilation.

I look for those 4 issues.

I think what you're saying is especially true at the youngest ages. The problem is we're being told to teach what is no longer age-appropriate and then dx the kids as behind or having ADD, etc. when they aren't.
