My mum would often sit on the sofa just reading. Sometimes, when she finished a book, she'd ask me if i could go upstairs to "the big bookcase" and pick what she should read next.
I'd sit there for aaages looking at Dragon Lance covers, then bring one back down.
"Oooh good choice!" She'd say.

Parents regularly ask me “How do I get my child to read?” I ask them “How much do you read in front of your kids?”
My parents read a lot in front of me.
One of the books on my Dad’s bookshelf was this one. I vaguely remember him telling me about it when I asked. Finally got round to reading it…

Our interests were different, but he was happy to recommend books. And movies.
My dad didn't read a lot, but it had his books on there too (always autobiographies). And the bottom shelf had the "heavy books". A big encyclopedia, the Osborne Book of Knowledge, an Atlas, a history of folklore.
An Aunt once gave me Animal Farm as a Xmas present, thinking it was a book for kids.
I was seven
I remember bringing that down one day with a new book for my mum and saying i wanted to read that one.
"Okay" she said, then just left me to it.
He has extreme dyslexia and still struggles to read/write
His was full of books WITH SPACESHIPS!!! I was 8 or 9 by that point and i asked if i could try and read some and he said "of course! That's what they're for!"
And that was when scifi exploded into my life.
Cousin Pete and i share a birthday and for my 12th he gave me A FUCKING BOX of second hand scifi.
And well you get the idea from thar point on.
In our house is needing new bookshelves.
I remember Aesop’s Fables “killin ma legs” when I was a wee boy. I still read a fair bit now.
Both my parents read lots (past and present tense). Not all of their children do. Husband reads loads, as does SIL. They didn’t have much money growing up but made very good use of libraries.
