Canberra's options are limited. Australia is militarily indefensible using just the Australian population and GDP. Australia requires a large power ally for defence.

The choices are the US, the Quad (Australia, US, Japan, India) or China. 4/

The United States would have a lot of problems fighting a war against China. For a start, there are satellite ground stations which must be (a) in the southern hemisphere; (b) somewhere between GMT+8 and GMT+11.

So, without Australia, the US loses a large proportion of it's overhead monitoring 5/
