I tried to get my family and another group who uses fb messenger to switch to slack. No one will even try to make the jump. I don’t want meta on my devices.
I would say Signal is the best messaging app from a security and stability and corporate trustworthiness perspective, but no idea how likely you are to get people to use it.
Your other messages make me wonder if it chokes on certain types of videos though. I've never had an issue but do remember like... Mkv files or something not working.
It's too complicated for my dad, though Mom manages. I think one reason they agreed is that with the family on both iOS and Android devices, it's one of the more convenient cross-platform video chat options.
I think your Dad could probably work it out if he wanted to but I understand the whole “I don’t wanna….” I don’t blame him lol. It’s part of the reason I never went on Xitter
Signal is what my family uses, both for ease of use and security. Also as a non-apple ecosystem person, the video calls feature works well to cover the facetime gap. Haven't personally had any issues sending images or video, though I do see that's been a sticking point for you trying it out :/
We solved this for family and some friends using Google Chat nee Hangouts. Still has a lot of the same "you already have this account you use everywhere" stuff, includes decent free video calling, looks like DMs/group DMs they're already used to
Gotcha. GroupMe may fit the bill. We use it a ton for Scouting related stuff (both Cub and older). Users in our groups range from 20 to 80-somethings. Once it's on the phone if you have notifications on for chats you just tap the Noti and respond. Also supports DM and Group chats, images, links, etc

IMO it's the perfect chat app.
