Only hit piece on it I saw was in the Australian Spectator, which was from a pome, saying that we can't let the colonies do that, such dangerous ideas might make their way back to mother England.

Actually really old.
Cos convicts when they arrived wore uniforms with P.O.M.E (prisoner of mother England) stamped on them.
And since they were always the newest arrival in the colony they still acted English.
