how do you ask police for input on a prospective tenant without sharing that tenant's information?

is the information being sought to determine a prospective tenant's eligibility not captured in a criminal record check? would you use allegations not proven in court to reject someone from housing?

So right now we don’t ask or get police input and unproven allegations never were a part of it. I guess I need to explain how access to SH works which is different from ordinary tenancies. For SH applications there is a Coordinated Access and Assessment Committee (CAA) run by BC Housing.

There are different CAAs for different programs. For SH it is made up of the funder and providers. Sometimes different outreach or shelter operators. Each brings referrals to the table to advocate for placements. Information is shared at that table for the purpose of finding appropriate placement.

Sometimes there is thorough history shared including housing history and level of acuity & support need. This is important.
Police used to be a part of the table, they are no longer. There are some programs where health gets a say on whether someone gets accepted into a program which I dislike bc

Health should only provide health care rather than decide if someone is suitable … not their expertise. That has been the concern with police in the past. BUT we have swung so far in the opposite direction that as providers we may not get the info we need.

Scenario example: female applicant has a violent partner we don’t know about. She is low acuity so moved into building with no controlled access. First week there asks staff for help in the few moments alone. After that partner damages property, threatens other residents, she won’t press charges
