NATO should have presented a suggestion for this by now. Clearly, Ukraine needs NATO membership to have a lasting peace. What can Russia do about it? Nothing. Will Russia start a nuclear war because of NATO membership for Ukraine, absolutely not.
But, NATO membership will not be given as long as Hungary(Orban) and Slovenia(Fico) is able to stop it. Maybe as well Germany with Scholz as Chancellor of Germany.
The legitimacy of imperial states rests upon a projection of power - losing to an 'inferior' people usually results in their collapse. See the 'First Russian Revolution' in 1905, and 1st Chechen war.
There's an important dynamic that most aren't aware of. Imperial states *have* to win, their legitimacy is founded on a projection of strength, losing to an 'inferior' people generally results in their collapse, see 1st Russian 'revolution in 1905 and Chechnya for examples.
Do you still believe that NATO membership is something of value? NATO today looks as weak as a baby chick. They are totally unwilling to take hard decisions and give russia the push back it deserves. What was NATO response to russian missiles using NATO airspace? Or jamming GPS? Or cutting cables?
Couple of reasons I don’t like it. 1st & foremost, the people trapped in those territories who’ll be continually subjected to 🇷🇺 savagery as they are today. 2nd 🇷🇺 gets their hands on the precious resources they’ve been going after to pay for their war & make it seem worthwhile. Defer to 🇺🇦s though.
NATO membership worked for the FRG too. East Germany was united after the break-up of the Soviet Union. Whoever comes after Putin, if he wants to normalise his situation with the West, he will not cling to the occupied Ukrainian territories.
What you say makes sense ...however I think without unconditional surrender the same poison will exist in Moscow .
It took unconditional surrender to reframe Germany and Japans national outlook .
