... hell, the days of an average person walking into a local computer parts store, or at least a Radio Shack in a nearby strip mall, are long, long gone, so even any ambient exposure to all the components that go into modern life & the tools it takes to assemble them are alien to most consumers.

I was legit a weirdo for being a 90's kid into that with the Archer 200-in-1 electronics kit, Crystal Radio kit & more. Even then, computer programming swept me up instead & that's still an outlier hobby for kids, even ones who end up in CS undergrad. No wonder they're all blindsided by this.

& those instructions & even kits still exist, but the idea that's just gonna be something a kid picks up in the same mall they're getting an Orange Julius & a Hot Topic band shirt at is just done & has been for 15-25 years, so they never get even a taste of electronics manufacturing.

in my youth there was 3 different stores I could walk to within a mile to build electronics from nothing but a schematic. Now? I think maybe Vetco is all thats left and its a 50+ mile round trip.

I live in another country & I think Vetco still might be my nearest option AFAIK. Everything else is just online order now, which is fine if you're already in the hobby/job, but there's no incidental discovery. Vetco used to be in the Overlake Fred Meyers for a bit - maximal ambient exposure!

Just walking aisles and getting exposure to items you might not know exists just isn't easy to do anymore with online retailers. I could never stumble into a book by Mims and then make 555 timer synth now. Good news is my kids elementary school has a after school robotics club at least.
