Dissenting point of view: At steady state, one professor will "raise" one PhD student to become professor, given that academia cannot grow indefinitely. All his/her other PhD students will leave academia. The attrition rate is therefore a function of the maturity of academia in the country.

Tbg, I read this with a higher level of pessimism because these cohorts relate to researchers who, today, would be regarded as late-stage/established careers. We know that academia has been through many bottlenecks since then, so I would expect continuing rates for today's ECRs to be much lower.
