Interesting. But boxing involves two people who agreed to go into the ring for money. Lynching has a terrible, complicated history which seems somewhat different from reactions to the shooting in some respects. But agree it is a closer counter-example.

Other folks spent decades arguing that social and cultural norms are reproduced through cultural institutions and objects like rituals, books, films, media, and yes, games. So there's no clinically causal relationship between games and violence but shooting up characters isn't socially benign either

Also, there have been hundreds of assassinations through the decades, and none have created a hot new trend for assassinations. People can be inspired by a prompt to do what they already are willing to, but their brains can't be rewired by encounters.
