rn G is forcing users to stay on G through as much of the customer journey as possible, until the user is ready to transact & usually willing to click a paid ad to navigate to a site. Paid search is direct $$. Being able to report on growth of unique search queries juices $$ shareholder value. IMO.

Google tried this for a while as an extension of Google+ (but it only impacted your own results, AFAIK). I think it was mainly an issue of lack of use. We're not average searchers, and average searchers aren't going to bother.

I'll add that I strongly suspect hyper-personalization like this is very expensive at Google scale and didn't move the metrics they care about moving.

I loved it in circles, where you could dial u0p or down certain circles to show more or less.

Good point on us not being average searchers.

Many years back another engine tried this. It was a colossal flop as it was spammed so heavily it became near useless. These types of user activated boosts are childs play for programmers to spam

Snap did it. The difference here is it is only for YOU not for the algo.
