None of us need worry about the bat illustrated in this article since it is a Flying Fox, one or other of a genus of fruit bats native to Asia and Australia.

I am on a planning committee, and spent several years working with TVERV checking all planning apps for Berkshire and Oxfordshire. Anything except Common and Soprano Pipistrelles and BLEs are pretty rare and never stop permission. The only newts checked are Great Crested.

Present planning controls are usually a paper exercise where ecology is concerned and where they do produce interesting results they get ignored.
We'd do better to provide proper scrutiny of the sites that do matter, and if we in the UK we don't know them already we are not doing our job

Things aren’t prefect, but ripping up what we do have in terms of environmental protection (without careful consideration) risks making things much worse.

My point here is that they did very little to provide environmental protection but they did provide a lot of ammunition for the right wing media to stir up trouble.
It was always notable that the Palmate Newt has no protection whilst the much commoner Great Crested was fully covered.
