I’m from LA but spent my summers as a kid in East Texas with my grandparents. I loved country music but always was aware that the WP didn’t accept Black people.

When I was 5, our family took a two week vacation in our station wagon out west from TN and back. My dad had Charley on LOOP! It was either him or Tammy Wynette for two weeks 🤣.

My Mom always said she hated country music because she was raised by vile bigots who listened to Skeeter Davis etc. Over time, she (and I along with her) learned to appreciate good music regardless of genre.
