This looks very interesting! I'm curious how you're managing the simulation and the UI separation. I'm working on a tycoon game now, and I'm wrestling with this problem. That is to say, are the sims currently off-screen set up 1 to 1 like the ones on screen? Where does one blur the lines, if ever?

amount of sprites or particles shouldn't be a problem. Tile maps, particle systems or GPU instancing and draw call batching can help with that. Updating everything every frame in a simulation chokes the CPU on the other hand. So think about using some sort of internal update tick for your sim...

usually the player won't notice at all if something's "ticked" every x frames, every few seconds and so on. You can also divide work along several frames by limiting e.g. how many tiles are updated per frame and so on. It depends on your stack but there should be timers, coroutines, yield...

statements or similar for implementing this (wouldn't recommend Unity coroutines if that's your engine though). Also make use of centralized manager/updater classes which iterate over e.g. all workers and update their state in one method instead of having an update callback per worker.

Thank you for such a comprehensive answer! I'm going to chew on this a bit. I'm using Godot and my strategy was to calculate the simulation and then have the view mirror the simulation state. This gives me a lot more to consider in the way of options and methodologies. I appreciate it.

Dang, I was hoping to steal some implementation ideas, but mine is made for the web in node.js 😅

Logic is mostly decoupled from Unity's GameObjects (I use the 2D tilemap for rendering but heavyweight objects for several thousands tiles would be crazy) so I think it's similar to other tile-based games (it isn't ECS though). https://www.redblobgames.com/grids/hexagons/ is an extremely useful source :)
