I can see it now. “You’ll love it. Canoa is… ummm… a movie about community values. Yeah. That’s it! It’s about community values and upholding beloved traditions.”
It's probably the most anti-movie I've ever seen because of how well it relays what happened and also refuses to give people what they think they want. You come in expecting one kind of horror and find out it's a completely different experience.
I think people that didn’t like it didn’t get it. Also, I try not to watch trailers because for some, it sets a certain expectation of what viewers THINK it is versus what it is. Same reason why many didn’t like The Witch because many do not understand how dark folklore can be really scary.
