yes, that's what I was thinking of. I know it's most often used in the word "naïve," but I'm not sure if it technically could be used in *any* word with adjacent vowels that are pronounced separately. like would it fit in the word "reäction" or other words like that?
it seems like it's more reasonable to use it in words with doubled vowels that are pronounced separately (like "preëminent"), but I don't know about words like reaction or creative, etc. maybe it's supposed to be for words that are less common?
