Being born around the corner from Withins - the supposed inspiration of Wuthering Heights, I should prefer that book. But it was too grim. Even grimmer than a mad wife burning to death in an attic while the swain of the novel has his eyes burnt out. And that dear folks, was a happy ending.
Yes exactly. I tell my students you have to read Heathcliff as Satan, and then it all falls into place. I also introduced them to that Get Down With the Sickness song cos that's how to enjoy WH.
I feel like shes just a shitty spoilt selfish obnoxious human, tho. Heathcliff is a different order of being AND has reasons to hate people in power: ok he is vile for abusing young girls & his disabled kid, but raging against racist landowners is (hot) Romantic Satan stuff
