I was talking to someone about pre porn-ban twitter saying how it was a lot more social back in the day (more personal posts, replying to each and forming mini-communities). They were like "aww... that sounds nice and sweet" and I had to explain how it was also just completely savage too. 😭

Yeah anything huge eventually got mean.

Like I remember it was either Sonic Fan Game HQ or Sonic Eats Rings but like after Moogle Cavern shut down we went to one and after a month or so it was overrun by shitheads. Eventually turkied.

Heck, this website is a good example honestly.

The only difference was that back then there were no social media so whenever someone was caught being an absolute jackass (and also weren't the mod team's privileged little baby), they'd eventually get booted from the forum or chat room.

The only REAL difference was, since communities were often more insular, you were not subjected to as many opinions on everything as we are now with social media platforms. But that also meant if you had really awful people in that group/forum you were REALLY stuck with them around you

The only difference with the old forums and message board days is that they were usually a bit more strict on rules and people would be banned for being only exceptionally nasty or disruptive, but cruelty was within these platforms since the very beginning

You'd get banned temporarily or fully for double posting or bumping threads, but then you'd get a nerd thread where it devolves into trying to kill each other with words and PMs and you'd at most get a locked thread

Then there was the shunning and total looking the other way

Like, I cant underemphasize how fandom was not "*more* welcoming" way back when. You still had cliques, cloutchasers and pearl clutchers, you still had people delighted to meet others who love the same thing they do. I'm defs for Be A Good Person Online, but dont pretend this is a recent problem.

The thing about the internet today is that everyone and their racist grandma is online now PLUS with smartphones (and cameras) in everyone's pocket at all times, it's a lot easier to be constantly bombarded with it. It feels like doxxing is a lot easier today too. The panopticon is real.
