Some of the people around me rely on donated coats for their kids to go to school. They couldn't afford to send them to private school with less than a full scholarship. A voucher is just a cruel joke on them, stealing the money for their kids' schools to let the rich send theirs to private schools.

Of course not... because poor families cannot AFFORD the ADDITIONAL cash (despite voucher) to make personal choice private schools work. Money will drain from public to private (for profit) schools living public schools as SHELLS in the community!

These vouchers are a good start, but in the state of Ohio a school voucher covers tuition, however not “fees”. These can be more than $1000 per child, per year. That is disqualifying for most kids would benefit.
Folks should know this. Parents can’t afford to use vouchers for better schools.

I’m sure they are shocked it isn’t working. Cuz they don’t listen. Vouchers work for middle and upper class families. Lower class families don’t have the same options - like transportation to school outside of the school bus routes or a stay-at-home parent or access to afterschool care.

In '23, tuition for day students at McCallie School in Chattanooga was 34k. For boarders from rural TN it's 66.5k. 7k doesn't get you there, but it's a SWEET tax break for those who could afford it anyway.

The thing is few uneducated poor lower class parents are going to drive to their kids to the rich suburban neighborhoods where most of the better private schools are located, even if their children were able to get accepted, mostly because of false pride.

Voucher programs are the work around of desegregation. In poor states they're counting on the fact that a majority of BIPOC families are poor & can't benefit from the vouchers. Private schools have always been segregated along class lines & for the most part racial lines.

Probably because, like in TN, the poorer counties don’t have private schools those kids could use the vouchers. This bill is such a disenfranchisement for poor kids and that’s which people are supporting it. I mean, it is for all kids, but the poor would really just get hit harder. Again.

True story, the private school my daughters attend raised their tuition once school vouchers were available here in Oklahoma. They call it Parental Choice Tax credit, odd since we have always had the choice to send our kids to private schools, these vouchers are subsidies that benefit the well off.

Charter schools perform worse than public and hire unqualified teachers. Christian schools are a mix but hire real teachers. Then you have prep schools which far exceed both & hire only PHDs

Initially applied to be a substitute so I could see if I wanted to go back to school for education. 5th grade teacher quit on first day, so I got her job. The kids did fine- probably bc of their parents, first gen.

The vouchers are not and will never be enough to pay for school on their own. They are worthless to anyone who can't pay to make up the difference. As private schools fill up with those who can pay more, they'll raise their prices to compensate. It simply diverts money out of public schools.

I wonder why? Vouchers generally do not cover the complete cost of attendance at a private school. You still have transportation, which public schools provide at no charge. You have uniforms, equipment, fees. These private schools do not want poor people attending, so they make it difficult.

Clarification: It’s not a choice, a whim by poor people to not use them.

The vouchers only cover PART of very costly private tuition. Poor people don’t have the money to pay the remainder, just like planned by Gubnah Lee and Republicans.

It’s designed this way on purpose—to hurt lower income families and to benefit higher income families. And they aren’t “choosing” not to use vouchers—they still can’t afford the raising private tuitions!!
