Have a son born with Prader Willi Syndrome. He got an EHCP at 3 in 2006 & extra govt nursery funding & access to Surestart. SEND in Cornwall is now a total mess.He's 22 in October. If you want a real disaster investigate both the health & social care available to vulnerable adults in Cornwall

Having been to a SEND tribunal that lasted 2 days, I can tell you that it took its toll on our mental health and personal finances. And I was lucky to be in a very good job at the time. I feel for the parents.

I know of two English families who moved into my previous village, because they felt their Autistic children would be better supported in Scotland. Having autistic grandchildren myself, my heart ached for them.

Scotland has the same issues—zero accountability, little support, and constant failure of SEN/ASN children by those in power. Parents are chasing support like a unicorn that doesn’t exist. How is this acceptable?

SEN should be a standard part of teacher training IMO. Having two Sen children myself, the ignorance among teachers and even Senco’s is astounding. Considering the percentage of the prison population that have learning difficulties, it is essential for society that we turn this around.

We say this in Scotland too—SEN training (ASN here) shouldn’t be hard to enforce. Governments hire most teachers from their own country’s universities. If they want inclusive education, they should ensure universities train teachers properly in SEN/ASN. They control the supply and hiring of teachers

Thanks for this article. EHCP is a nightmare. Schools with excellent SEN teams i know have advised the first application is often 'take one' I work with an excellent school thru exams for EHCP & SEN students & it is very costly to do & time consuming to do well (unpaid overtime)

The local government and social care ombudsman (LGO), which handles complaints about English councils, upheld 1,043 cases regarding Send provision in 2024 – nearly 40% more than in 2023, and four times more than the 258 upheld in 2021.

In one complaint upheld by the LGO in 2024, Suffolk council took 18 months to create an education, health and care plan (EHCP), with the complainant’s daughter missing out on education throughout that time.
