I do think the benefit system needs reviewing - but punching down when the super rich are not getting looked at is mean spirited & actually far more discriminatory than anything Tories did - certainly not socialist or in keeping with values or labour. Very disappointing indeed.

I found it almost impossible to arrange things for my wheelchair bound husband because he didn’t claim any benefits. Without proof he got PIP or any other disability benefits I couldn’t even get him an accessible ticket to a football match and it made a Blue Badge application very difficult.

Not really, he retired early on a private pension and didn’t qualify for any benefits. He ended up applying for attendance allowance because it’s not means tested.

It also will affect local authorities, as when you get a LA care package they do a financial assessment to decide how much (or whether) to charge towards it, and that does include PIP.

Changing the rules and with them, a person’s entitlement to PIP unfortunately does not also remove their care needs.
Who will provide the care when people can no longer afford to do so due to removal of entitlement to Carers Allowance? And how will this help PIP claimants obtain work?

I know people (some very close) who would be destroyed if they lost their PIP. They are all doing the best they can with their lives & trying to achieve the best them - i.e., not moping at home as Liz Kendalk seems to think they are. They will be encouraged to suicide.

Carer’s allowance is paid to unpaid carers who look after disabled people. It is only paid to people who look after someone in receipt of disability benefit – and the main working-age disability benefit in England and Wales that qualifies for carer’s allowance is PIP

Most PIP claimants won’t lose eligibility from the planned changes, but those whose PIP payments are based – or would be based – entirely on the daily living element, and who do not score at least four points in any one daily living category in their PIP assessment or reassessment, would be hit.

The welfare reform green paper says the government will consult on possible “transitional protection” for those who lose their eligibility for PIP and the entitlements linked to their award, but even if this is adopted, “transitional” protection would by definition only be temporary.

As are most PIP awards anyway. A future reassessment date is given at award notification with the proviso that the award can be reviewed/reassessed at any time before then if so decided by the DWP.

An important impact will be via the benefit cap. If someone loses their PIP and isn’t exempt from the benefit cap via another route, they could have their benefits cut substantially.

People who get passported benefits via the ‘mobility’ award – including the Blue Badge scheme, vehicle tax exemption/reduction, Motability cars, London ULEZ exemption, and those passported benefits available to all PIP claimants – will not be affected.
