Heartbreaking to see another nail in the industry coffin, and that people who make our beloved shows are no longer able to live there. My friends from grad school still in LA just lost their kids’ school and are contemplating returning to NY as well 💔

EVERYONE I know in LA is working or lower-middle class - including those who’ve directed hit movies and written on or acted on some hit shows. They mayve been paid GREAT on ONE project after 20+ yrs of constant work to get there. They mayve gotten paid well for a couple semi-big gigs.

The rest of the time, they either work as a crew or cast at very basic rates and not all that often, supplementing that work with waiting tables or working other day jobs to pay their rent / feed their families. They’re not rich. And you’ve seen some of them on tv.

They’ve busted their ass for decades just to get any job in that industry, some may even now after decades FINALLY pay their rent with these jobs - but that’s it. They’re not rich.

This fire will make it untenable for them to stay in LA, when they’ve already been out of work for 1-2 yrs now due to

The streamers cancelling shows, greenlighting fewer shows, etc etc.

I know set designers and props masters and character actors and writers and producers who’ve been out of work in an expensive city they’d only JUST begun to make a living in their career not a few yrs back.

They’ve been delivering food and working construction and bartending (if they’re lucky) and BARELY ecking by. And now this.

If they haven’t lost their (rental) home or apt, they’ve lost their community. My friend’s kid’s school burnt down. My other friend lost their home.

This will fundamentally alter a film & tv community that was already struggling to hang on, to stay there, to “stay alive till ‘25” and now this.

The Bear keeps getting all these fucking awards. It’s fantastic. And a writer can’t make rent BEFORE the fires. And now this.
