Presumably even if you pass through the state and a cop pulls you over and you show your updated ID, they could throw you in prison and now you’d have all the challenges a felony on record presents.
This bill has only one sponsor and is extremely unlikely to pass or even get a vote, even in Texas… but something that fails now and seems impossible is more likely to keep coming up in multiple places over the next year or two until it becomes normal thinking.
State and federal governments are already really pushing the fraud angle on transgender people (see the wording of the trans military ban), and we should expect this could happen within the next couple years, maybe less due to the accelerated fascist timeline.
Trans friends: make plans. Multiple plans. Don’t panic, but prepare. Make sure every trans person you know is doing the same. These plans will look different for all of us depending on several factors, but there’s a lot of overlap, so help each other make them.
