Story time: As Dr. Seuss's biographer, I have people come up to me a LOT and tell me how much they loved his books GO, DOG. GO! and ARE YOU MY MOTHER? as kids.

That book had proven once and for all that there was a demand for great books for kids.
Authors of Beginner Books (as originally established) could ONLY use vocabulary words from an educator-approved vocabulary list containing about 350 words. Seuss himself admitted it could be "painful to write."
