What a constant war footing does to society, how combat affects an individual both before and after, the logistics of a galaxy spanning battle: cool, interesting.
My old group of heresy gaming mates used to call this the Battle for the Abyss split.
Those that wanted bolter porn, loved that book.
Those who wanted a good narrative and character development had it in their skip recommendations
I think this is why I like the Ghost books so much. Yes, there is seat of the pants action and cataclysmic death... but also the tension of waiting around, sorting the logistics, soldiers pulling pranks and day to day Imperial Guard life.
That's exactly why, for me, the best combat that does happen to involve marines is in Flight of the Eisenenstein. Tight ship corridors and against a, then unknown, horror.

Actual fighting? Meh

They’re just not for me
Let’s start a club!
Or maybe we already have?!
First rule: Tell everyone it's quite nice.
With no marines.
One of my favourites is Only In Death with Gaunts Ghosts - lots of narrative, plenty of action and horror stuff going on.
But not a "big battle".
