This commission was based on a George Pérez cover. A rather specific request. Starfire is fun character to draw and I think it's was one of George's strongest costume designs. Not sure why people keep updating and changing it.

I would think it's to downplay her figure and to make her less sexy but I'm sure some artists found her original costume difficult to draw. Or they wanted to put their own stamp on the character. Whatever the reason--none have been an improvement to my eye.
Years ago when you took on Spider-Man you were drawing Marvel's Spider-Man and you would try your best to keep him on model and consistent with the previous versions. Now people do THEIR Spider-Man. They want to put their stamp on these characters. That may be going on here with Starfire.
The cartoon skewed younger so it made sense to dial Starfire back a few notches and then it became more of a matter of doing something that would fall somewhere in the middle. If the audience from the cartoon was buying the comics it made some sense to try and emulate that a bit.

Perhaps you know why (at least in some cases), but are too polite to say so?

I tend to lean more towards ego, but I don't rule out prudishness.
Anyway, until someone proves us wrong, I agree that they failed to fix something that wasn't broken.

Agreed.

Ditko introduced us to the red and gold armor. It felt like an organic evolution, so changes are welcome when they serve character development.
I wish I could say the same for all developments, but I feel meaningful growth is becoming increasingly rare these days. Or, am I just growing old?
