I used to think the REF was a useful way of demonstrating the research strength of non-RGs/Oxbridge. But things have drastically changed since then. As you say, the game is rigged

Yes, REF may (hmmm) have been more benign in an earlier era, but I can see literally nothing in it now for workers in our sector. We shouldn’t have to help make the system of our own punishment.

there's so much rigorous evidence now of the direct costs and negative externalities of REF and so little evidence of effectiveness at its nominal objectives, there's really no good excuse to keep at it

I agreed my start date at NMS so that Kent could benefit from my funding/outputs for the REF submission. I wish I'd thrown them to the winds instead!

Yeah, it seems that HEIs price in this kind of collegiality and goodwill but never reciprocate, which is why I think we need to organise the withdrawal of goodwill. Sad state of affairs tho.
