social media is all about being social and actively promoting yourself and making connections, I know a lot of very talented people who only have like 100 or less followers

Exactly that, but I suppose some think that way of the example I said if certain artists want to get paid from making art.
Although, I believe that'll happen in time, I'm sure not everyone popped off as a famous, well known artist from the get go

it might sound like I'm exaggerating but i really did see a video recently of someone from hr from a big studio saying that in a concept artist portfolio you need 3d models and technical drawings and cross-sections and everyone in the comments are like yeah how I'm supposed to hire an artist

also people wildly misinterpret what "make weird art" means when they go parroting that as the be-all-end-all of advice

it means to make art true to yourself and your vision and to hell with what the mainstream wants- that by making something you mean, it will shine through.

telling people to go out and "make something weird!! make a bunch of weird shit! don't make normal stuff!" is completely not only defeating the whole point of "make weird art", but it's stifling and putting yet more stressful limitations on beginner artists who might now follow disingenuous advice.

only to couple itw ith exactly what you said, the completely opposite of "BUT DO IT STUDIO STANDARD" is just so sad to watch.

the first quote is being wildly misinterpreted via contrarianism and misunderstanding and then a huge heap of "make yourself profitable by studio standards". ugh.
