It was the first Oval last year too, although they do have a two days of open test/rookie orientation at the speedway in April.

Since they had to take Texas off the schedule due to calendar conflicts with Nascar, yes! this is the second year. No one likes it

I saw somewhere that ovals are the hardest thing for them to excel at in the current Indy Car setup.

It's compounded by the fact that while there are other ovals on the schedule, Indy is an extremely unique setup to the others (length, corner turn radius, banking, etc.) It's not ideal to be the first, but the many hours of practice mitigate it to a large extent.

Ya there's a lot of thing happening keeping there being another oval on the schedule, but they do get two days of testing in April and another 4 full days of testing May the week before qualifying and 1 the Monday after, so they get a LOT of time at Indy to prep for the 500
