Are we all suffering from Trump Derangement Syndrome? Or will this individual really change history? A structural-forces historian could build a strong case against Donald Trump’s importance. Here’s why https://on.ft.com/4g7bfl4

Trump represents the worst of the US. He's an unintelligent, criminal, malignant narcissist whose only goals in life are money, adoration and revenge. Most Americans voted TWICE for him. So would the rest of the world feel any compassion for them if he turns their country into a h*llhole?
Unfortunately, the rest of the world will also be impacted without actually having the luxury of a vote, such is the influence of US. The more appropriate word is bewilderment that most Americans voted TWICE for this unintelligent, criminal, malignant narcissist. It’s insane. Just why?
True. But the more often Americans vote this way, the less the impact will be. Because when the US stops being 'that shining city on the hill', the world will turn away from Silly Trumpistan and find other allies and friends.
I’m guessing you’re probably from Netherlands. Sure EU now has to double-down on a stronger Union with a less engaged USA, so they’re plus points on creating greater independence, as you say. But economically, USA will still dominate and leverage that power. Wild times ahead. Buckle up
Just keep remember that it’s not *most*! It was barely 1/3! And he didn’t gain any support from last time. Americans need to refuse to be defined by that minority.
But the minority will always define the country when half of the majority throws away its vote. Apparently, a lot of Americans just don't care who runs their country.
There hasn’t been a threat to democracy in anyone’s lifetime here under 80 years old. They just don’t pay attention to politics and don’t know the danger. They’re watching sports and entertainment and just think all politicians are bad. Most will be as shocked as the 1930’s Germans when it goes ⬇️.
The difference is the Germans didn't vote the NSDAP (Nazi party) into power. It never got a majority in parliament despite all its tricks and terror. Hitler's rise was an unconstitutional power grab. American voters, von the other hand, gave Trump the keys to the palace.
H1tler’s party became the largest party in the Reichstag with 37.3% of votes. He was legitimately appointed chancellor because they had controlling power of their parliament. DT won with 31.5% of the voting population. He now also controls our legislative branch. Power grab scheduled 1/20/25.
A false contrast. Ideology, revolution and war lie behind individuals who undoubtedly steer them, like Hitler and Stalin or who seize a moment of choice, like Churchill. In democracies today, leaders exercise discretion within environments. Outcomes are uncertain, total control always an illusion.
Trump is 100% made in America, he is the quintessential ugly American, this country made him and plethora of horrible people like him and raised him to be the leader for all of the ugliness this land can muster, we have the leaders we deserve.
There are a number of dynamics which may render him ineffective at change. First, it is not clear whether he has the focus to maintain drastic action. Second, there are international conflicts and a potential unwinding of financial leverage which may very well occupy the administrations attention.
Actually, Trumps lack of focus and attention to the press could be used to slow him down by inventing a series of ‘contentious’ topics and amplifying them through MAGA echo chambers. Eg petition to rename Idaho into Kindaho because the former contains Freud’s id.
My prediction:
1 . 🍊 pulls US out of NATO
2. Put!n has Iran nuke US. (Put!n will tell Iran I’ll have your back if you attack the US but it’s a trick)
3. 🍊 says Russia will help the US strike Iran (ala Bush, Iraq war)
4. 🍊 & Put!n look like heroes. 🍊Made president forever. Put!n pulls the strings
We are not going to like it, it's going to be awful, painful and incredibly stupid, and if WWIII breaks out, we'll probably be on the wrong side of it.
It is offensive to label opposing Trump as Trump Derangement Syndrome. It is called "reality". He is a national security threat, a racist, a rapist, a liar who tried to overthrow our government. These are just facts.
Interesting essay. And yes its about power. Granular polarization continues the trend of fragmentation and the social media acceleration, global use of English, and loyalists will disrupt bigly, and we will have to rebuild America when he's done with it. But the alternative was "same old"
None of Trump's ideology of Project 2025 will survive humanity's evolution, but the damage will create opportunity to reform at last. Trump is everybody's useful idiot, even those of us who despise his every moment alive.
I’m always a bit of a skeptic in the morning, and usually try to see both sides of an argument.
But I never thought that TDS would include inept politicians, family and TV reporters taking charge of budgets and divisions of the US Government that are bigger in scale than most countries GDP.

Eat your whole grains and the greed you feel will diminish.
You won’t feel so needy when your body gets the nutrients it is craving.
At least that’s how it played out with me.

But shit certainly will change.
Sadly not true about GenX Jens who believe we are going to be on the wrong side of WWIII.
Because I'm afraid it might just be idiots all the way down.
