Why do they keep the baby cows in separate pens? Why not slightly bigger pens with 3-5 baby cows, that way they can run and play? Why can't they be slightly less miserable?

So looking it up apparently they're only kept alone for the first 8 weeks, because their immune systems are weak and farmers are afraid of disease spread.

After that they are put into a pen with other baby cows. So that's nice at least.

Um, sorry to break this to you, but the baby cows that can't be used for the dairy stock are sent to slaughter. At a few days old. So that's all the males plus the unwanted females.

Well yeah... they're livestock. You only need one male to impregnate hundreds of females, only those with the best genes are kept for breeding (they still need some males to produce the next gen).

What would you propose be done with all the unnecessary male livestock instead?

Well, I guess we could have an efficient food system that doesn't produce waste. That's what veganism strives for. It's not ideal, but is probably the best we can do for ourselves and the planet.

I'd also like to note that in the wild male bovines are driven from the herd. Only a very small percentage of them go on to form their own herds, the rest are picked off by predatory species.

It's not like in the wild all those male animals would have gone on to live long and happy lives.
