childhood obesity is due to many factors. Poverty leads to purchase of cheap, filling carbs instead of fruit and veggies; lack of physical exercise; working parents who are too tired to fix a nutritious meal; etc. I believe that the fewer medications given to ANYONE is better.

It literally does make it better, though. Fixing the causes of obesity takes time, not treating it in the meantime is the same as not bothering to bandage a wound until it's healed.

In the Netherlands most little children are carried around in push chairs until they are 4. Then the parents ferrie them around in their ‘bak fietsen’. The don’t walk because that prevents the parents from being on their mobile. And cycling by themselves is also difficult because they to watch them

The key problem is that those are, as you say, long-term solutions. Until the causes of obesity are fixed, not treating it with drugs is the same as not bothering to bandage a wound until it's healed.

most obese people need self control and proper nutritious foods not a drug that only works if you stay on it.

children shouldn't be on it, the side effects and weakening of bone density ain't worth fitting a societal mold faster.

The bone density loss is a result of weight loss, not the drugs. The drugs just make the process faster, not worse. The side effects actually directly caused by the drugs are minor in comparison to the damage caused by remaining overweight for longer.

I find this moralising around obesity really silly, but instructive. People are fat because we are evolutionary mal adapted to living in an industrialised society that can shovel food that is scientifically designed to hit our pleasure centres. Ozempic can help with that

It's also a socio-economic problem. Until real food becomes as convenient and inexpensive as processed foods the cycle of dis-ease will remain. It's all so much more complicated than this and asking such a loaded question here is only to stoke conflict.

Processed food is the problem. It tastes better than healthier choices, and nothing will prevent people, much less kids, from eating more of it than they should.
