Same. Like, yeah, these shows are less popular, but that's because they're fucking old at this point, and - unlike Dragon Ball - didn't have a literal continuous feed of new episodes, remakes, and movies coming out over the course of the entire millennium.

Toonami was definitely an important part of making anime more mainstream but the Toonami weebs who hype it up as the singular most important element from the 90s can’t imagine people back then were consuming anime in any other way and it’s always a very US centric point of view

everyone knows the existence of all Japanese animation is only possible due to Toonami's all-pervasive influence. Anime did not exist before Toonami, and only remains due to Toonami's benevolent grace. All creation is judged according to its proximity to Toonami's holy light

It reminds me of how when One Piece was off people kept saying it would’ve done better if they’d aired it earlier. You know, after they originally had it early on the block and even briefly aired it at the beginning of [as] on Saturdays. It’s more complicated than “just air it at the right time.”

Yeah, One Piece is now popular in-spite of linear television in the United States, rather than because of it, and that's ok. Not every show needs to or can follow the circumstances that made DBZ work.

But we did get Berserk merch which is more than like most other anime that did air on Toonami. There’s a Griffith plushie that I put on a news desk at the ol’ CNN Center, that mysteriously vanished. Couldn’t find out it before we moved out of the building so it’s probably still there somewhere.

I do find it odd that Berserk was like the #1 Blu-ray last year for like 2-3 months on Amazon and it's always in the top sellers for manga on the reg. And yet, it's just not popular ENOUGH

I'm not. Outside of Toonami, Tenchi was basically an adult show, and Pioneer didn't really attempt to attract the Toonami kids audience outside of some edited VHS tapes and Ryo-Ohki plushies. Also, I think the modern versions of Tenchi aren't attractive to modern US audiences anymore.
